Short Mat Players Tour (SMPT) – Spectator Code of Conduct
1. Purpose
The Short Mat Players Tour (SMPT) welcomes spectators to all events and aims to create a respectful, enjoyable, and safe environment for everyone. This Spectator Code of Conduct sets out the standards of behaviour expected from all individuals attending SMPT competitions.
2. General Expectations
Spectators must:
- Treat players, officials, volunteers, staff, and other spectators with respect
- Follow instructions from SMPT officials and venue staff
- Behave in a manner that supports a positive sporting atmosphere
- Avoid any behaviour that disrupts play or causes discomfort to others
- Respect safeguarding rules, especially regarding children and photography
- Comply with venue regulations and SMPT policies

3. Behaviour During Play
To ensure fair and uninterrupted competition, spectators must:
- Remain quiet during play
- Avoid distracting players (e.g., loud conversations, shouting, sudden noises)
- Keep mobile phones on silent
- Refrain from coaching or giving advice to players during matches
- Stay clear of playing areas, mats, and walkways
- Follow any seating or viewing instructions provided by staff
4. Prohibited Behaviour
The following behaviour is not tolerated at SMPT events:
- Abusive, aggressive, or threatening language or actions
- Discriminatory or offensive remarks
- Harassment or intimidation of players, officials, or spectators
- Interference with play or officiating
- Excessive noise or disruption
- Damage to venue property or equipment
- Entering restricted areas without permission
- Any behaviour that compromises safety or wellbeing
5. Photography & Filming
Spectators must:
- Follow SMPT’s photography and safeguarding rules
- Avoid photographing children without parental consent
- Refrain from taking photos or videos that disrupt play
- Respect requests from SMPT officials regarding restricted photography areas
6. Safeguarding
Spectators share responsibility for maintaining a safe environment. They must:
- Report any safeguarding concerns immediately to SMPT staff
- Avoid inappropriate interactions with children or adults at risk
- Follow all safeguarding instructions displayed or communicated at events
- Ensure that any children attending the event remain under their supervision and care at all times, and are not left unattended within the venue
7. Alcohol, Food & Personal Conduct
Spectators must:
- Consume alcohol responsibly (if permitted by the venue)
- Avoid bringing prohibited items into the venue
- Keep walkways and emergency exits clear
- Dispose of waste responsibly
- Maintain good personal conduct at all times
8. Consequences of Misconduct
If a spectator breaches this Code of Conduct, SMPT may take any of the following actions:
- Verbal warning
- Removal from the playing area
- Removal from the venue
- Ban from future SMPT events
- Referral to venue security or authorities (for serious incidents)
Sanctions are applied proportionately to the behaviour involved.
9. Reporting Concerns
Spectators may report concerns or incidents to:
- SMPT officials
- Event volunteers
- Venue staff
Safeguarding concerns must be reported immediately to the SMPT Safeguarding Lead.
10. Review
This Code of Conduct is reviewed annually or following any significant incident.
